On May 1, 2010, the Kentucky Derby was run for 136th year in a row. It was a televised event on NBC and many people tuned it to watch. It was run by Super Saver and Calvin Borel was the Jockey. He was the first jockey to win three Kentucky Derby events in just four years. The bets were extensive at more than $30 million for a first-place finish and $21 million for the exacta.
Other Winners
Ice Box, Paddy O’Prado and Make Music for me were the ones who followed Super Saver to the finish line as more than 155,804 people watched on in excitement. This also made it the 6th largest Derby in all of its years.
Odd Turn of Events
This Derby’s favorite pick was Eskendereya. However, it was pulled from the race the week before because of a swollen leg. This meant that the field had no true favorite. Super Saver was actually second favorite, falling behind Looking at Lucky, who ended the race in sixth place.
It was also a very messy event thanks to rains that fell the night before the race and a majority of that day prior to the race. It is a dirt track, which meant that there was mud all over the track which could have slowed some of the horses.
